From then on, it was all Mercyhurst as the Lakers upset the powerful Flyers 19-6. He scored 94 points in a Laker uniform and amassed 3,258 all-purpose yards. During his years, Gorring was a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Second Team Small College All-Star in 1986, a Football News Pre-Season All-American choice in 1987, and a Pittsburgh Press All-District First Team selection in 1987. He also played baseball for four years, compiling a career .294 average for coaches Fred Conger, Bob Shreve, and Joe Jordano.
