Erie, Pa.— On Wednesday, Mercyhurst announced the baseball schedule for the 2022 season. The Mercyhurst Baseball team closed out the 2021 season with a 27-15 record while making the PSAC playoffs for the 13th straight season.
Mercyhurst will play a full PSAC and non-conference schedule in 2022 starting on Feb. 25, 2022 at Glenville State against Fairmont State in the MEC/PSAC Challenge. The Lakers will play two more games in the opening weekend against Glenville State and Alderson Broaddus. The Lakers will then head to Salem for two weekends for the Salem Invitational. The Lakers will also play non-conference games against Lake Erie, Ashland, Notre Dame (OH), Madonna (Mich.), and D'Youville. Mercyhurst will play each PSAC West school four times.
The Lakers return 36 players from last season including all but two starters. Both Matthew Gibson and Philip Ferranti return for Mercyhurst. Gibson led the team in batting average (.380) while Ferranti was an anchor behind the dish and hit .343.
The top three home run hitters are also back in Erie as Jack Elliott finished the season with 14 round trippers, Troy Banks was second on the team with eight and Ferranti circled the bases six times. Elliott also drove in a team high 37 runs, Josh Surowiec was second on the team with 31 RBIs while Ferranti and Gibson drove in 28 and 26 runs respectively.
On the bump the Lakers will need to replace All American relief pitcher Michael Krauza and starting pitchers Michael McDonough and Frank Fraschetti. Nathan Holt returns for the Lakers along with Josh Greggs, Hunter Treece, and Robert Hartman who each made five or more appearances in 2021. The Laker pitching staff has a 4.58 ERA last year to go with 369 strikeouts.
Head Coach Joe Spano enters his 23rd season as the skipper of the Mercyhurst Baseball team. The Lakers have made three College World Series appearances in five seasons including being in the final four in 2019.
