ERIE, Pa. – For the second time this season, the Mercyhurst University women's soccer team lost in overtime as the Lakers came up short 3-2 against Shippensburg on Friday afternoon.
After the loss, the Lakers fell to 3-3-1 in the season and 2-3-1 in the PSAC. Shippensburg improved to 5-2-1 in the season, and 4-2-0 in the conference.
For the second straight game, the Lakers were the first to score early in the contest. Sophomore
Lauren Testa started the offensive rush, taking a shot inside the penalty box. Raiders' goaltender Shlebie Rackley made the save but gave up the rebound as freshman
Linnea Laitinen tallied her second goal of the season, giving the Lakers a 1-0 lead.
With less than four minutes to go in the first half, Shippensburg's Meghan Mahon scored her first goal of the season to even the score at one. Raiders' Brooke Clippinger executed the corner kick for Shippensburg, placing it perfectly for Mahon to head into the top center of the Lakers net.
At the 56:33 mark into the match, Mercyhurst was awarded a penalty kick after an illegal tackle inside the box by a Shippensburg defender. Junior
Janine Wong took the kick for Mercyhurst and recorded her first goal of the season to gave Mercyhurst a 2-1 advantage.
Less than eight minutes to go in the contest, Shippensburg scored following a scramble in front of the Mercyhurst goal. Kylee Bricker found the loose ball and converted, forcing the contest into overtime.
The Raiders' scored less than three minutes into overtime when Ashley Vellucci shot into an empty net on a rebound.

Ellie McDougall took the loss for Mercyhurst after allowing two goals on 13 shots on net. Freshman
Kristen Koch made an appearance at the end of the first half and allowed one goal.
The Mercyhurst Lakers will host Millersville University on Saturday, September 28. Kickoff is at 2:30 p.m. at the Mercyhurst Soccer Field.
