Wright Secures First Career Shutout as Women's Soccer Picks Up Road Win

CHICAGO — The Mercyhurst women's soccer team secured a 1-0 victory against Chicago State on Thursday with the game's only goal proving decisive as the defense held strong to complete the shutout.

The opening minutes between the Lakers and Cougars proved to be even, both teams opening with a strong defensive display during the first half. Freshman goalkeeper, Annis-Clara Wright made a her first save in the sixth minute, maintaining the tie. Several fouls and attempts came from both sides, neither side finding rhythm. The Lakers found a late half push with shots from Camryn Klein and Madison Sievering. Sievering proved to be dangerous, shooting a close attempt that struck the top woodwork in the 41st minute. The half ended 0-0.

The Lakers came into the half looking for the go-ahead goal. It wouldn't take long to find it, as Sievering found the back of the net for the Lakers in the 49th minute, lifting them over Chicago State early in the second half. This marked Sievering's fourth goal of the season. The Cougars fought to find an equalizer, putting multiple shots on frame. Despite several attempts from Chicago State, including a late free kick right outside of the 18 yard box, Wright stood tall in goal.

The half concluded with the Lakers holding onto their 1-0 lead. Chicago State's offensive efforts were thwarted by Wright's decisive saves and a strong defensive effort from the Lakers.

Sievering scored the game-winning goal. She recorded a total of five shots, four of which were on goal. Wright achieved her first career shutout, making seven saves in net. Maddi Cowburn registered one shot on target.

The Lakers will play their season finale Sunday at noon when they welcome the newest NEC member, New Haven.
