CALIFORNIA, Pa. - The Mercyhurst University women's soccer team saw its season come to an end on Tuesday afternoon with a 5-0 setback to seventh-ranked California University of Pennsylvania in the opening round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference tournament. The Lakers end their season with a 9-9-1 overall record while the Vulcans move on to the semifinals of the PSAC tournament with a 16-2-1 overall mark. California (Pa.) will play Shippensburg in the semifinals.

It was Mercyhurst's first appearance in the PSAC Tournament since dropping a 1-0 decision to Indiana University of Pennsylvania back in the opening round of the 2009 postseason. The Lakers won the PSAC Championship in their first year in the conference back in 2008.

The Vulcans received goals from five different players on Tuesday as they tied a school-record with five goals in a postseason match. California outshot the Lakers 26-7, including a 15-4 margin in shots on goal.

California jumped in front just 4:23 into the match when Chelsea Crockett beat Mercyhurst goalkeeper Ellie McDougall from just inside the goalie box. It was Crockett's sixth goal of the season and was assisted by Megan Politowski.

The hosts added two more goals to close out the first half. Kelsey Russo scored her fourth goal of the season at 14:28 with assists going Crockett and Erin Hogan. Politowski then scored her second goal of the year with just 1:07 left in the opening half. Jordan Gray had the assist.

Haley Henderson and Bethany Smyda each scored goals in the second half for the Vulcans to provide the final margin.

The Vulcans not only outshot the Lakers 26-7 but also held a significant 13-2 margin in corner kicks.

Senior Gabrielle Catrabone paced the Lakers with a pair of shots on goal. Sophomores Nikki Charboneau and Lauren Testa had the other shots on target.

McDougall was peppered all afternoon and recorded 10 saves in the loss. It tied for her second-highest save total of the season. McDougall recorded 11 saves in a 3-2 loss to Shippensburg back on September 27. She ended her season with a 9-9-1 overall record.

Meanwhile, California goalkeeper Meghan Jayes recorded four saves to improve to 8-1-0 on the season.
