Men's Water Polo Wins Third Straight CWPA Division II Title

The Lakers won their third straight CWPA Division II title Saturday.
SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio- The Mercyhurst men's water polo team won its third consecutive Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division II Championship Saturday. The Lakers beat Notre Dame College, 20-9, and Salem International, 16-7, to win the title. The one-day event was held at Notre Dame College.

In the championship game, the Lakers took a 1-0 edge after a quarter. They exploded with five goals in the second quarter and then poured in eight more goals in the third period, pulling away to take the title. Brett Luehmann scored five goals and dished out three assists. Danilo Svorcan scored three times, while Rob Clinger totaled two goals and four assists. Garret Schoeman had two goals and three assists. Matt Cote recorded 12 saves and two assists. 

Against Salem, Mercyhurst took a 6-2 advantage through a frame. It led 10-4 at halftime and then won the third period, 4-0. Luehmann scored four goals and tallied two assists. Justin Deis and Jordan Hodur both scored twice, while Clinger a goal and three assists.


Coach Curtis Robinette has now guided the Lakers to three straight and six of the last seven Division II Championships. 

Mercyhurst improved to 13-3 this year. It hosts Monmouth and Notre Dame at the North East Aquatic Center on Sunday, October 27.
