ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst men's water polo team continued their season as they took on the Penn State Behrend Lions. In a tightly close matchup, the Lakers persevered and won the match 13-11.
In the first quarter, the Lions opened up the scoring to take an early 1-0 lead. Two minutes later, the Lakers tied the game thanks to a goal from
Asher Jones. The Lions responded with a goal of their own, but
Daniel Goldgisser scored for the Lakers, ending the first quarter in a 2-2 tie.
In the second quarter, Penn State Behrend opened up the scoring again with back-to-back goals to open the quarter. Mercyhurst responded with three consecutive goals, coming from Jones,
Caden Stover and Aiden Botterill. The Lions responded with back-to-back goals, ending the first half with a 6-5 lead.
In the third quarter, Mercyhurst opened up the quarter with a goal from Stover to tie the game at 6-6. The Lakers continued to display their offense with two more additional goals from
Keller Sens and
Declan Puacz, taking an 8-6 lead going into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Lakers added to their lead with back-to-back goals from Botterill and Puacz. The Lions were able to score a goal, but the Lakers were able to respond with a goal of their own from Botterill again, giving him the hat trick. The Lions responded with three goals, narrowing the Laker lead to 11-10. The Lakers responded with two goals of their own, coming from
Ben Gavran and
Nate Cheney. The Lions scored a last minute goal, but the Lakers were able to hold on to the lead, 13-11.
The Lakers resume MAWPC play when they match up against Fordham on Nov. 8 at 5:30 p.m.
