Lakers Lose Consolation Games To Bucknell & Mount St. Mary's (Md.)

BRONX, N.Y. – The Mercyhurst Men's water polo team continued MAWPC Championship going into consolation play, facing off against Bucknell and Mount St. Mary's (Md.). The Lakers lost both games with a final score of 23-6 to Bucknell and 14-8 to Mount St. Mary's.
 
Game One
In the first quarter, Bucknell opened the scoring within the first minute of the game. Mercyhurst responded with an advantage-goal from Aiden Botterill, tying the game at one. The Bisons proceeded to score six straight goals, until that streak was broken by Caden Stover with less than a minute left. The Lakers entered the second quarter with a 7-2 deficit.
 
In the second quarter, it began the same way it did in the first. Bucknell opened up with a goal in the opening minute of the quarter, and Mercyhurst responded with an advantage-goal, this time coming from Luke Larson. The Bisons proceeded to go on 4-0 scoring run, until back-to-back goals came from Daniel Goldgisser and Nate Cheney, narrowing the deficit at half.
 
In the third quarter, the Lakers opened up the quarter with a goal, coming from Asher Jones. The Bisons countered with two goals of their own, extending their lead to 10. Botterill helped narrow that lead tallying his second goal of the game for Mercyhurst. Bucknell scored four straight goals, extending their lead entering the fourth.
 
In the fourth quarter, Bucknell proceeded to score four more goals to secure the victory 23-6.
 
Game Two
In the first quarter, the Mountaineers got on the board first with an advantage-goal within the first two minutes of the game. Shortly afterwards, the Lakers tied the game with a goal from Aiden Botterill. With just eight seconds remaining, Declan Puacz scored a goal to give Mercyhurst a 2-1 lead to enter the second quarter.
 
In the second quarter, the Mountaineers responded with three goals of their own to take a 4-2 lead. Nate Cheney responded with a goal for the Lakers to narrow the deficit to a goal. Mount St. Mary's proceeded to score three more goals to go into the half with a 7-3 lead.
 
In the third quarter, the Mountaineers opened up the quarter with a goal to extend their lead to five. Just three seconds later, Asher Jones scored a goal to keep the Lakers in the match. Shortly after, the Mountaineers quickly got that goal right back. The Lakers scored two goals in response, with both of them coming from Luke Larson. Going into the fourth, the Lakers trailed 9-6, but they were keeping themselves with reach.
 
In the fourth quarter, Mount St. Mary's added on to their lead by scoring four additional goals. Mercyhurst scored another advantage-goal coming Larson, giving him a hat-trick on the day. Botterill scored his second goal of the game, but the Mountaineers were able to hold on to a 14-8 victory.
