Slezak Leads Lakers to 4-1 Win Over Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst College women's soccer team broke its five-game skid with an offensive breakout against Millersville University on Saturday afternoon.  The Lakers posted four goals in the 4-1 win over the Marauders.

Sophomore Sarah Slezak netted her first and second goals of the season today.  In the 25th minute, Slezak put the Lakers out in front after she capitalized on a well-placed corner kick by senior Molly Marsh. Just nine minutes later, the duo struck again, giving Mercyhurst an early 2-0 lead over Millersville.  Marsh crossed a ball from the right side to Slezak, who punched in the game's second goal.

At the break, Hurst held an overwhelming shot advantage, 13-2, and a 4-1 corner kick lead.

Less than ten minutes into the second half, Millersville tallied its first goal of the contest, bringing them within a goal of the Lakers.  The score came off Kelsey Mattola's foot after she found a loose ball in front of the net.

The Lakers responded at the 58:13 minute mark when sophomore Gabrielle Catrabone put a chip shot over the Maurader keeper, putting the Lakers up 3-1.  The goal marks Catrabone's third goal of the season.  At the 82:25 minute mark, junior Olivia Resch added an insurance goal with the help of freshman Kiley Cleveland.  Cleveland made a centering pass from the edge of the box which found Resch, who netted her first goal of the season.

Resch's goal not only marks her first of the season, but it also marks her first goal of her career.

All told, the Lakers took 20 shots compared to 14 by Millersville and the Marauders held the advantage in corners, 6-5.

The win gives the Lakers an overall record of 6-7-1, while they improve to 3-6-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.  The loss drops Millersville to 5-8-1 overall and 3-8-1 in PSAC play.

Graduate student Rachel Griepsma earns her sixth win of the season after making five saves on the day.  Griepsma's overall record improves to 6-7-1 on the season.  Millersville's keeper suffers the loss after making five saves as well; her overall record is now set at 5-8-1.

The Lakers will return home for their last home match of the season on Tuesday, Oct.18 as they take on Indiana University of Pennsylvania in a PSAC showdown.  Game time is set for 4 p.m.
