WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Mercyhurst College women's soccer team fell today, Oct. 14 to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference foe West Chester University, 2-1.
The loss drops the Lakers to 2-6-1 in the PSAC while handing them a 5-7-1 overall record. West Chester improves to 9-2-3 overall and holds a 6-2-3 PSAC showing.
The Lakers netted their only tally of the afternoon at the 89:40 mark when junior
Sara Hawksworth drove home her second goal of the season. The goal moved the Lakers to within a goal but time expired before Mercyhurst could find the equalizer.
Tara Malkiewicz of West Chester put her team ahead after delivering her second goal of the season in just under nine minutes of play.
Ashley Saylor scored the eventual gamewinner at the 82:18 mark as the assist was credited to Melissa McKeary.
The contest played back-and-forth with the Golden Rams taking nine shots while limiting the Lakers to just four. West Chester applied heavy offensive pressure throughout the match as they took eight corners as a result, the Lakers were limited to three set pieces.

Rachel Griepsma made three saves in the losing effort as her counterpart made one save in the win. Griepsma's record moves to 5-7-1 on the year with the Golden Rams Shannon Fedyk registers an overall record of 9-2-3.
Mercyhurst continues its tour of eastern Pennsylvania as they travel to Millersville University to take on the Marauders tomorrow, Oct.15. Game time is set for a 1 p.m. start.
