BLOOMSBURG, Pa.- The Mercyhurst College women's soccer team took #13 Bloomsburg University to a 2OT draw. Junior
Paige McDowell of the Lakers registered the lone tally early in the second period that stalemated the two teams.
In the first period of the contest, Bloomsburg held a 7-1 shot advantage and a 2-1 corner kick advantage. Junior
Rachel Griepsma saved two of the seven shots, four more sailed wide of the net. At the 33:25 mark Katie Walczuk of Bloomsburg netted the ball scoring her sixth goal of the season against the Lakers. Two minutes later Mercyhurst had its best chance to score one of its own when, freshmen
Sarah Slezak ripped a shot from outside the box but was saved by the Huskie goal keeper, Frances Nicoletti.
Mercyhurst came out in the second half shooting the ball, edging out Bloomsburg in shots 7-6 and corner kicks 5-3. At the 49:36 mark McDowell registered her ninth goal of the season when she put the ball in the top shelf past Nicoletti. Again
Griepsma saved two shots, while watching the rest of the Huskie shots go wide of the net.
The first OT was played very quickly as neither team took a shot or corner kick, and each team only committed one foul a piece.
The 2OT shot advantage went to the Lakers who shot the ball four times compared to just two shots by Bloomsburg. Bloom did hold the corner kick advantage 2-0 but to no avail. McDowell put two shots on goal in the 2OT but both were saved by Nicoletti, sophomore Sarah Hawksworth also put one on goal but had the same result as McDowell.
Griepsma saved both shots that the Huskies took in the 2OT keeping the score knotted at 1-1.
When the final whistle blew the score was 1-1, Bloom held the shot advantage 15-12 and corner kick advantage 7-6. With the draw the Lakers record now stands at 6-4-1, in conference play it is 3-4-1. Bloomsburg holds the record of 5-1-2, and they are 4-1-1 in conference play.
The Lakers are back in action on October 6th against The University of Indiana (Pa.), the game time is set at 4p.m. IUP holds a 6-3-1 record, and a 4-3-1 PSAC record.
