Lakers Look to Continue Impressive Run of Form

9/15/2024 11:43:00 AM

DeKalb, IL & Lawrenceville, NJ- The Mercyhurst Men's Soccer team will hope to use their recent success as a motivator for the new week ahead. They will continue their trip in the Prairie State as they take on the Northern Illinois Huskies this upcoming Monday. Then, they have several days off before they head east take on the Rider University Broncs on Saturday.

Lakers on Fire
The 3-3 Lakers started the season 0-3. They lost their first three matches by narrow defeats that do not tell the entire story as to how their season has gone so far. They bounced back and have won their last three matches in a row. They outscored their opponents 6-2 in this span of matches. They will look to leading goal scorers Luis Felipe Santos and Jorge Tallada Torres who each have a pair of goals. Senior captain Dylan Sumner, who has a goal and three assists, will also be a key factor in these matches. Sumner is the only Laker to have played in all 540 possible minutes this season.

Scouting the Huskies
The Northern Illinois Huskies are 1-5 this season. Their only win came against Chicago State, who just joined the Northeast Conference alongside the Lakers. The Huskies will hope to generate offense through senior forward Kevin Kelly who has two goals and an assist as well as junior midfielder Jose Gomez who has two assists and a goal. Prior to joining the Huskies last season, Kevin Kelly had 48 goal involvements in just 44 appearances at Daytona State College.

Scouting the Broncs
The Rider University Broncs are 4-2. They lost their first two matches and then picked up a winning streak of their own winning four of their last four. This includes a 2-1 win over the New Jersey Institute of Technology that concluded last night. The Broncs will look to their senior midfielder, Bryan Akongo, in hopes of creating chances going forward. Akongo has three goals and three assists this season. Momo Diop, their leading scorer, will also be a target in the final third.
