Edwards' Equalizer Lifts Men's Soccer to 1-1 Draw at Howard

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Mercyhurst tied Howard 1-1 on Sunday at Greene Stadium. The Lakers generated eight shots and three corner kicks from 80:41 to 90:00 while the score remained 1-1. Mercyhurst had 26 shots on goal, which almost doubles its previous highest of 15.

Mercyhurst spent much of the first half working from behind after Howard scored at 17:13 to make it 1-0. Earlier, the Lakers earned a corner in the third minute and put an early shot on goal through Max Beech before Alvar Silva sent a shot right in the 16th minute. The half tightened into a foul-heavy stretch after Howard's goal, but Ronny Wakelin still created a chance off the right woodwork at 28:32. After Howard hit the top woodwork in the 35th minute, Mercyhurst finished the half with late pressure as Joe Chinchilla missed high, Silva and Nathan Katari forced saves from the Howard goalkeeper, and Wakelin added another shot. The Lakers outshot Howard 7-2 in the half, but Howard carried a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The Lakers' second-half push turned the match level in the 61st minute, when Joseff Edwards scored to make it 1-1. Earlier, Mercyhurst pressed while down 1-0, putting multiple attempts on goal through Benjamin Buckley, Silva and Katari, and earning three corner kicks between 53:48 and 56:28. After Edwards' equalizer, the Lakers continued to create chances, including a Luis Felipe Santos shot wide in the 65th minute and a late stretch that included three more corners and eight shots from 80:41 to the final whistle. Leonard Seitz, Santos, Silva and Buckley each had attempts during that closing surge, but Howard's saves and Mercyhurst's off-target shots kept the score unchanged as the half and match ended tied 1-1.

Up next, Mercyhurst travels to Connecticut to take on CCSU on October 11th at 2 p.m.
