Women’s Water Polo Toppled By the Mount to Close Out Weekend

Lexington, Va. - The Lakers finished out their second weekend of action with a loss Sunday afternoon, falling 11-8 to Mount St. Mary's. After suffering a defeat at the hands of the Mount during their first weekend of action, Mercyhurst looked to get some revenge and started out strong but MSM had a solid rebuttal to help them claim the three-goal victory.

How it Happened

The Lakers fired the opening salvo of the game with Bri Allstun finding the back of the net just 30 seconds into the game. Mount St. Mary's did not wait around all too long to respond and tie things up as they did so a minute late to show that this would be a close contests. After the Mount secured their first lead of the game midway through the opening canto, Rachel Vlietstra dented the twine two times in a row over the span of two minutes to help put Mercyhurst in front going into the second period, 3-2.

The next stanza belonged to the Mount as they made all the right adjustments and managed to claim a lead before the halftime break. The Lakers got the scoring started in the second with Allie Dombkowski getting her lone goal of the game at the 7:16 mark of the second to make it 4-2. That, unfortunately, did not lead to more offense for Mercyhurst as Mount St. Mary's went on a 5-0 run to end the frame. Mercyhurst's defense proved to be a little too aggressive with four of the Mount's five goals coming off of the power play; they found themselves in a situation with an advantage and did not let it pass them by, going into the halftime break up 7-4.

The third period was a quiet one with only two goals scored in the frame with one coming for each team. Freshman Freya Green got the lone goal of the frame for the Lakers, helping cut it to a two-goal lead for their counterparts, but Mount St. Mary's responded soon after to help them keep a comeback at bay. The Mount continued to add on in the fourth with a goal in the opening 30 seconds to make it 9-5 before Mercyhurst went back on the attack. Alexa Corrao got the Lakers back on the board at the 6:02 mark of the fourth, making it 9-6 game, in hopes of giving Mercyhurst a spark. She ended up scoring again before Grace Brzyski got in on the action, hoping to close the deficit, but MSM had an answer for every Laker goal to help them claim the victory.

Highlights

Rachel Vlietstra and Alexa Corrao tied for the team-lead in goals with two apiece with both of Vlietstra's coming in the first period and Corrao's in the fourth. There were three assists for Mercyhurst with Krista Domaracki, Marley Hanlon, and Grace Brzyski each having one while Brzyski added on goal to her line as well to be the only Laker to notch one of each.

Next Game

The Lakers go back out on the road this upcoming weekend for a quartet of games in Lewisburg, Pa. The team has two contests slated for Saturday, February 10th, as they see Saint Francis first at 11:40 a.m. before a 6:00 p.m. bout with UC Merced. They then return to the pool the following day for a 2:20 p.m. matchup with Bucknell before rounding out their time at 6:20 p.m. with Mount St. Mary's for a third time this year.
