Box Score 2 Lewisburg, Pa. - Mercyhurst women's water polo was unable to get the job on day one at Bucknell, dropping their two contests on the day. Fast starts for both La Salle and Wagner helped them grab the momentum in the early going and cruise to wins over Mercyhurst. Despite solid adjustments in the second half of both games, Lakers still found themselves on the wrong side of the scoreboard in the 13-3 and 15-3 losses.
How it Happened
Game one of the weekend ended seeing the Lakers and La Salle with the Explorers getting the better of the matchup. La Salle came out of the gates strong and managed to put five goals on the board in the opening frame while their defense proved strong, now allowing a goal for Mercyhurst as the score stood at 5-0 at the end of the first. The second quarter was more of the same as the the Explorers were able to take an 8-0 lead into halftime. The Lakers looked to break through and get on the board, mounting several strong attacks at the net, but were unsuccessful and found themselves scoreless in the opening half.
Mercyhurst's offense began to find something in the third canto, scoring a pair of goals. It was Bri Allstun who helped get the Laker's offense going as she was able to find the back of the net on two occasions in the frame. In the fourth, senior Allie Dombkowski got in on the action with a goal of her own with one goal while Mercyhurst's defense held stout and allowed just one goal in final period of play. Despite the improved play in the second half, Mercyhurst still found themselves on the wrong side of scoreboard, falling 13-3.
Game two ended up being a similar story for the Lakers. They fell behind in the early going to Wagner and never quite caught up thanks to a strong effort from their counterparts. The Seahawks came out of the gates strong as they tallied six goals in the first frame with five different players able to find the back of the net. Mercyhurst hoped to slow down the opposition in the second canto and start to dig themselves out of the hole they had found themselves in but Wagner just did not let up on their way to an 11-0 lead at the halftime break.
Mercyhurst managed to dent the twine twice in the third period as their offense began to find some answers for what their counterpart was throwing at them. It was once again Allie Dombkowski getting it done on offense as she scored one of the two goals in the frame with the other belonging to Grace Brzyski. In the fourth, they added on with one more with Sakura Gavin getting in on the action. Those trio of scores were not enough, though, to overcome the deficit in the 12-goal defeat.Â
