Mercyhurst baseball continues to stay in the news thanks to their stellar ace, Jarrett Heilman. The junior hurler comes off a spectacular season, helping him garner major award after major award. This time around, he is named to the ABCA/Rawlings Atlantic Region First and named the Pitcher of the Year for the region, announced Wednesday morning.
Heilman ended the season with a 6-2 record in 11 games of action while leading both the team and the PSAC in ERA with his mark of 1.38. That proved to be one of the lowest in the nation, coming in third in all of NCAA DII. The native of Freeport, Pa. proved to have a season that will go down in Laker history as his ERA is the lowest by a Mercyhurst pitcher to throw 60 or more innings since Dan Altavilla in 2014 (1.23).
The junior hurler was not willing to give up anything every time he took the ball, conceding just seven extra-base hits for the fewest in the conference while being one of only two pitchers in the PSAC to give up zero home runs. The seven doubles Heilman allowed were also one of the best marks in the PSAC with it coming in tied for third as Heilman continued the long run of great pitchers in Laker history.
Heilman's best run came in the month of April as he gave up only three earned runs across 32.0 innings of work for an ERA of 0.77 before the calendar flipped to May. Over that span, he had three consecutive complete-game shutouts to help him to a streak of 26 scoreless innings. His best game over that stretch came against Clarion in a game in which he allowed just one hit and one walk while fanning seven for the third-most Ks of his season.
