Erie, Pa. - After getting the sweep on the road this past weekend over Salem, the Lakers look to do so again this time around as they go to face Findlay for a four-game set. Mercyhurst begins their series with the Oilers on Thursday, March 9th, and close things out on Sunday.
1. Breaking Out the Brooms
Mercyhurst got their first sweep of the 2023 campaign this past weekend over Salem. The team outscored their counterpart 17-10 over the course of the series as all three games proved to be close. The Lakers relied on some clutch late-inning hitting to help them get the wins as they scored 11 of their 17 tallies in the seventh inning or later over the trio of contests. Zachary Kourous proved to be a big bat for the team as he collected at least one hit in each game, going 5-9 on the series overall with four RBIs and a double to his line.
2. New Faces
Kourous was not the only newcomer to help the team this weekend. Vincent Stutz had a solid finale, going 2-3 with a pair of walks while driving in a run and securing a double. Eric Chorba began the series hot, going 2-3 in game one while adding his second triple of the season to his line. The Lakers look to keep the ball rolling as some of the newest members of the team make their presence known.Â
3. On The Road Again
After their series with Findlay, Mercyhurst heads to South Euclid, Oh. to compete against Notre Dame College for their dozenth game in a row away from their friendly confines. Outside of the team's season opener against D'Youville in which they won 5-2, the Lakers have played every game away from Erie. The 12-game road trip is the longest since the 2013 season when they saw their first 13 away from the Mercyhurst Baseball Field.
4. Scouting the Oilers
Findlay is 6-6 on the season after splitting a four-game series with Saginaw Valley. This series against Mercyhurst serves as Findlay's home opener as they have predominantly played in Florida, looking for warmer weather. Aidan Lao has been the team's best bat to this point, hitting .429 while leading the team in doubles with six and walks with 12. Despite being the team's backstop, he displays solid wheels on the base paths as well with six steals to lead the team.
5. Next Game
After finishing their series with Findlay on Sunday, Mercyhurst makes the trip to Notre Dame on Tuesday, March 14th, with the two teams set to square off at 1:00 p.m.
