Men's Water Polo Wins Three of Four in Opening Weekend

Washington, Pa – Mercyhurst Men's Water Polo finished an action-packed weekend with a 3-1 record, making it their best start of the season since 2018.

How It Happened

The Lakers opened their season on Saturday with two games against Michigan State Club Teams, White and Green Team. They dominated on both sides of the pool, scoring 14 goals in both games, and allowing only five and seven. Danilo Vujovic led the charge in the first game with six goals. Owen Hardner recorded five goals in the second game.

Mercyhurst didn't slow down on Sunday. They won their third game of the season against Long Island University in the early match. After a great team effort, the game ended with a score 13-11. Vujovic once again was a top scorer on the team with four, helped by Joel Reinsma, Benjamin Villareal and freshman Owen Hardner, who scored two goals each.

After a close match Mercyhurst finished the tournament with a loss to Washington & Jefferson College. The game was tied at the halftime, but the Presidents outscored Lakers in the second half and won by a score of 15-13.

Hear From Coach

Petar Momcilovic recorded his first win as the men's head coach of the Lakers on Saturday. After a busy weekend for the team, he commented: "It was good to see the guys play their first games and get a gage on where we are as a team. A lot of work ahead but I am proud of them, the effort they showed and determination they have. The incoming guys stepped up and showed they are here to compete, and the returning players had very positive energy to support the team."

What's Next

The Lakers are scheduled to come back to Washington, PA on Saturday, September 10th. They are set to play Augustana College and University of Toronto.
