Bloomsburg, Pa. - Mercyhurst Women's Tennis made the trip back to Bloomsburg for the beginning of the ITA Atlantic Regional Tournament on Friday. The Lakers put forth a solid effort in their contests on their way to a pair of players resuming play in singles Saturday morning.
How it Happened
Mercyhurst began their day in doubles play with three teams competing in the morning. The Lakers came out on top in one of their opening round matchups with the win belonging to Roisin Murphy and Kayla Dean. The pairing played Millersville's Chloe Abramowitz and Hui Jen Soo with the Lakers commanding the bout throughout on their way to the 6-1 win. Dean and Murphy couldn't make it past the round of 16, though, as they fell by a count of 6-1 to IUP to end their run. Despite Dean and Murphy grabbing the only win of doubles play, Valentine Budin and Sara Bertolez Puente nearly made it a second, falling in a tight 6-4 match to Millersville's Maria Owed and Noelle Htwar.
In singles play the Laker's fared better with them taking home the win in two matches. Dean ended up with one of those wins, defeating Millersville's Noelle Htwar 6-2, 6-1. Sara Bertolez Puente was the other Laker to get a win with her defeating Elaine Lee from West Chester. Bertolez Puente dropped the first set, but won the second 6-1 and came out on top in the tie breaker 10-8 to advance.
What's Next
Dean and Bertolez Puente returns to action in singles play tomorrow in the round of 32 and looks to advance into the quarterfinals on Sunday. Dean will match up with Lorena Pintar of Frostburg State University while Bertolez Puente sees Sofia Krasikova of Charleston.
