Baseball Sweeps Sunday Doubleheader In Convincing Fashion

Salem, W.Va.—The Mercyhurst Baseball team played their first doubleheader of the season, the Lakers came away with convincing wins in both games.

Game One vs Wheeling (W, 19-3)

The Lakers opened the day with a dominating win over Wheeling as the Lakers scored 19 runs for the second time in three games.

Mercyhurst opened the scoring in the second inning by scoring three runs. Aiden Shephard notched a three run home run to start the scoring.

In the fifth, the Lakers pushed their fourth run across as Ryan Perretti drove in Josh Surowiec.

The Lakers scored twice in sixth inning. Wheeling scored their three runs in the sixth, after that the Lakers kept

Mercyhurst pushed four more in the seventh inning to extend their lead. The eighth inning saw the Lakers push two more runs across to cushion their lead.

The Lakers closed out the game in the top of the ninth by scoring seven runs to close out the game.

Josh Greggs earned the win of the mound while John Bufford Jr. picked up the save. Greggs and Bufford were the only two Lakers to toe the rubber, they combined for 12 strikeouts.

Game Two vs Salem (W, 13-3)

Mercyhurst jumped out to an early lead they put up a three run first inning. Casimer Sobaszek opened the game with a walk and came around to score the first run of the game on a Troy Banks double. Jack Elliott drove in Surowiec and then Luke Jackson drove in Banks on a SAC Fly.

Salem scored their first run in the bottom half of the second inning.

Surowiec opened the third inning with a solo homer to center field. After Elliott was hit by a pitch Sherphard blasted a two run homerun to make it 6-1. In the bottom half of the inning Salem scored their second run.

Shephard blasted his third homer of the day in the sixth inning to make it 7-2 Mercyhurst. John Susnik singled following the homer which was followed up by a Brandon Arnold single. With runners on first and second Sobaszek reached on an error that brought Susnik home. Arnold came home on an error on a pickoff attempt.

Elliott scored on the seventh inning on a Sobaszek single to give the Lakers a 10-2 lead. Salem responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the seventh.

In the top of the ninth the Lakers added three more runs. Logan Martella-Tasick drove in two runs with a single while Aiden Morrison came home on a wild pitch with two outs in the inning.

Jarrett Heilman started on the mound for the Lakers, he went six innings while striking out 12 batters. He allowed just two runs on five hits. Robert Hartman made his second appearance of the season and went two innings while striking out two while getting two flyouts and two groundouts. Hunter Treece took over in ninth and struckout one to close out the game.

The Lakers close out the weekend tomorrow as they face Salem at 12:00 PM.
