MADISON, N.J. — The Mercyhurst baseball team (15-30, 14-17) secured a 6–4 victory over Wagner (26-22, 21-10) at Vincent J. and Lenda F. Naimoli Ballpark on Thursday. A pivotal three-run sixth inning contributed to the Lakers' success, overcoming Wagner's early lead.
Wagner took an early lead in the first inning with two RBI-doubles, making it 2–0.
Mike Samarin put the Lakers on the board in the second inning with a solo home run to right field. The inning ended with a score of 2–1 in favor of Wagner.
In the third inning, Wagner extended their lead with a solo home run, bringing the score to 3–1.
The Lakers responded in the fifth inning.
Ranciel Ventura walked and
Zachary Kourous doubled, setting the stage for
Luke Babcock's two-RBI single, tying the game at 3–3. Wagner regained the lead in the bottom of the inning with a sacrifice fly by Nicholas Mazzotta, ending the inning 4–3.
Mercyhurst surged ahead in the sixth inning.
Zac Evenson and
Zach Black singled, and
Logan Koslin's two-RBI single put Mercyhurst in front.
Darek Staudt scored on Ventura's fielder's choice, closing the inning with Mercyhurst leading 6–4.
Wagner was unable to score in the final innings, securing a 6–4 victory for the Lakers.
Matthew Delvaux took the mound for Mercyhurst, pitching 5.2 innings and allowing 12 hits, four earned runs, and one home run, while striking out four batters and walking one. He threw a total of 93 pitches, with 63 recorded as strikes.
Nolan Kirsch came in as relief, pitching 3.1 innings, giving up two hits and three walks, while striking out two. Kirsch's performance secured him a save, marking a notable contribution to the team's effort.
Logan Koslin recorded two hits and drove in two runs, contributing significantly to the team's offensive output.
Mike Samarin added power to the lineup with a home run, finishing with two hits and an RBI.
Luke Babcock matched Koslin's contribution by collecting two hits and driving in two runs.
