Baseball Preps to End Regular Season at Niagara and Wagner

The Lakers are set to go on the road for the final four games of the regular season. They will travel to Niagara to face the Purple Eagles on Tuesday, May 11 and travel to Wagner to play the Seahawks starting on Thursday, May 14.
 
Previous Results
Mercyhurst is entering the final week of their season. Last week, they faced Central Connecticut at home in a three-game series and won one out of three. They lost game one 5-1, lost game two 8-7, but won game three on senior day with a score of 7-2. In game one, senior Zachary Kourous scored the lone run for the Lakers with a home run that was pulled to right field. In game two, freshman Mike Samarin went 3-for-5, including a double and a two-run single. In game three, graduate student Jayden Walker went 2-for-4 with both of his hits being RBI-singles.
 
Matchup History
The Lakers are 1-1 against the Purple Eagles all-time, with the most recent matchup being a 12-5 victory this season for Mercyhurst. In that game, graduate student Zac Evenson pitched a gem, going six innings, giving up one run, four hits and striking out six. The Lakers also displayed their plate discipline, drawing 11 walks.
 
The Lakers are 2-1 against the Seahawks all-time, with the most recent matchup being a 7-5 victory on April 27, 2025. Sophomore Anthony Krause got the win in relief, pitching 1.2 innings, giving up no runs, no hits, one walk while striking out two. Sophomore Nolan Kirsch got the final out of the game and got the save only giving up one hit.
 
Batting Leaders
Kourous leads all Laker hitters with a .372 batting average, which is sixth in the NEC. This past weekend, he put his contact skills on display, hitting .385 and also hit a solo home run in game one. Kourous is top 10 in the NEC in a plethora of categories, including triples, sacrifice flies, and slugging percentage.
 
Freshman Logan Koslin is second on the Lakers with a .283 batting average. Last weekend, he got hit by a pitch for the 22nd time, which is third in the NEC. 
 
Pitching Leaders
Junior Andrew Malec leads the NEC and all Laker pitchers with a 4.35 ERA. He pitched a gem in his recent outing, going eight innings, giving up three hits, three walks and five strikeouts. Malec's opponent batting average against has dropped to .222, which is first in the NEC. Malec gave up 44 hits this year, which is ranked first in the NEC too. 
 
Sophomore Nate Vargo is second on the Lakers with a 5.25 ERA, which is also eighth in the NEC. In his last outing, he pitched five innings, giving up six hits, three runs and three walks while striking out four. Giving up no walks in this outing against CCSU, Vargo's total remains at 21, which is ranked second in the NEC.
 
A Closer Look: Niagara
  • The Purple Eagles started their year 24-17-1 and had victories against Portland, Iona and St. Bonaventure.
  • Infielder Jacob Brooks leads the team with a .337 batting average, which is 11th in the MAAC. He also leads with 61 hits, which is ranked seventh in the MAAC.
  • Catcher/outfielder Rees Kozar is second on the Purple Eagles with a .326 batting average. He also leads the team with 38 RBIs, which is 12th in the MAAC.
  • Pitcher Gage Wheaton leads the team with a 4.50 ERA. He has pitched 60 innings this year, ranking 10th in the MAAC.
 
A Closer Look: Wagner
  • The Seahawks started their year 26-21, 21-9 in the NEC and had victories against Fordham, Lafayette and Princeton.
  • Outfielder Lukas Torres leads all batters with a .427 batting average, which is second in the NEC. His 76 hits on the year not only lead the Seahawks, but also lead the NEC.
  • Utilityman Joseph Mennella is second with a .363 batting average, which is eighth in the NEC. He also has 12 homeruns this season, which leads all Seahawks and is fifth in the NEC.
  • Pitcher Joseph Steventon leads all Wagner pitchers with a 4.59 ERA, which is second in the NEC. He also leads the team with 49 strikeouts, which is ranked seventh in the NEC.
