ERIE, Pa – The grapplers of the Mercyhurst University wrestling team wrestled to a hard fought 19-16 victory over the Kutztown Golden Bears at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon.
The two squads evenly split the bouts as both teams won five apiece however, it was the bonus point victories by Alexis Soriano and Max Stedeford that turned out to be the deciding factors.
Soriano would earn the only six-point win of the day at 141 when he pinned Kutztown's Kevin Fenstermacher in the final minute of the third period. The other bonus point victory for the Lakers came courtesy of freshman
Max Stedeford at 157 as Stedeford claimed a 12-2 major decision over the Golden Bear's Kibwe McNair.
Eric Bartos chipped in with an impressive 9-4 decision win over fourth ranked Collin Wickramaratna at 133. It was the highest ranked opponent that the redshirt junior has brought down this season. Additionally, freshmen
Mike Zacur and
Dillon Walker each notched three points for the Lakers. Zacur won his 149 bout with a 9-5 decision and Walker followed with a 6-3 decision over Ethan Baney at 174.
In the heavyweight bout between two top five nationally ranked matmen, it was No. 1 Andrew Dunn who scored a takedown late to defeat No. 4
Jacob Robb by decision in the highly anticipated matchup.
Up next, the Lakers will continue at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center next week when they host the University of Findlay and Pitt-Johnstown on back-to-back days.
