Erie, Pa. – Mercyhurst has announced the hiring of Michael Young Jr. as its new head men's and women's golf coach. 

Young Jr. graduated from Roberts Wesleyan in 2018 after spending three years on the course for the Redhawks before moving on to DeSales for two years, graduating with his MBA in 2020. During his time at Desales, Young Jr. was a graduate assistant for the golf program, managing the daily operations of the teams.

"We are thrilled to welcome Mike Young to Mercyhurst," said Assistant Vice President for Athletics Brad Davis. "Mike is committed to investing in our student-athletes at a high level. As a former Division II student-athlete, there is no question he is the right person to lead our programs going forward."

The former Redhawk has done well for himself on the professional circuit competing in the Philadelphia PGA Section in the spring of 2022. Prior to that, Young Jr. had three top-25 finishes including a top-five finish at the Willian Hyndam III Memorial Classic and is currently ranked 24th in the Philadelphia Player of the Year standings. His acumen on the course is sure to be a major factor in the Lakers' success going forward.

"I would like to thank Brad Davis and Andy Simon-Wambach for this incredible opportunity to serve as the Head Coach of the Men's and Women's Golf Programs," said Young Jr.  "Having previously competed in the same region during my collegiate career, I understand what is necessary for success at this level and I am eager to begin working with both teams to maintain the high level of competitiveness that Mercyhurst Golf has seen in recent years. I believe my experiences as a former collegiate golfer, coach and golf professional will bring new perspectives to both programs. I am very excited to work with the student-athletes and become a part of the Mercyhurst community."

Young Jr. begins his time as the new Head Coach of the Mercyhurst Men's and Women's Golf teams immediately, preparing for the spring portion of the Lakers' 2022-23 season.
