Men's Soccer Wins PSAC Championship

Box Score

Bloomsburg, PA – Mercyhurst Men's Soccer continues to add on to their already historic season as they defeat Bloomsburg in the PSAC Finals on the way to the first PSAC Championship since 2016 season. The Lakers got the better of the Huskies on their own turf thanks to an early goal in the 1-0 win.

How It Happened

The beginning of the match saw a lot of back-and-forth action as both teams were nervous and pushed the ball with caution. The Huskies started applying pressure early and creating scoring situations under the Lakers' goal, but Jonathan Gomes was there every time to save it.

Sean Kerrigan tried his luck in the 9th minute of the match, as he danced between his defenders and took a strong shot to the left. The Bloomsburg's goalkeeper bounced the ball out, as the Steph Petitt Stadium sighed with relief. A couple of minutes later Dylan Sumner passed the ball inside, as Jorge Tallada Torres headed the ball inside the net, putting Mercyhurst in 1-0 lead.

The Huskies tried to answer right away, but Mercyhurst was well organized defensively and didn't allow it. The Lakers held the lead for the rest of the half and went into the break with a one-goal lead.

The second half was similar to the first one, as both teams played a very physical brand of soccer and fought for every ball. The Huskies had to foul often, to stop the Lakers from progressing the ball. Kerrigan had a nice opportunity in 50th minute of the game, but his shot was saved.

Bloomsburg got more active toward the end of the game, as they threw all they had forward to tie the game. Sammy Ames took a dangerous shot in 67th minute of the game, but Gomes bounced it out. The Huskies tried their luck a couple more times, but the Lakers didn't make any mistakes and held the lead to the end. The whole squad erupted once they heard the final whistle, as the Lakers became 2022 PSAC Champions.

By The Numbers

Despite a 1-0 score, the game was full of action, as the Lakers took 20 shots and Bloomsburg took 16. The Huskies drew six corners but couldn't capitalize on any of them. Gomes recorded eight saves and had another clean sheet of the season.
