Men's Water Polo Finishes Penn State Behrend Tournament with Three Wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Erie, Pa – Mercyhurst Men's Water Polo finished the Penn State Behrend Tournament on Sunday to conclude their weekend slate as they ended things with three wins and one loss. On the second day of play, the Lakers lost to Washington & Jefferson by a score of 13-11 to begin their day, but redeemed themselves as they defeated Penn State Behrend, 16-11.

How It Happened

After a long Saturday, the Lakers returned to the Junker Center to play two more games Sunday morning. In their first matchup against Washington & Jefferson, Mercyhurst started slowly as they lost the first quarter by a score of 6-2. Motivated by Head Coach Petar Momcilovic, the Lakers found their flow in the second quarter, cutting the lead to just two goals. Despite great efforts in the second half, Mercyhurst couldn't come back from that deficit and eventually lost the game by a score of 13-11. Danilo Vujovic led the team with four goals followed by Teagan Thomas and Reed Bearden with two goals each.

In the second game of the day the Lakers took on their crosstown rivals – Penn State Behrend. Mercyhurst learned from their mistakes, as they started the game well and won the first quarter 4-3. They didn't slow down in the second as they built a substantial lead, going into the break ahead 11-4. Behrend didn't give up as they came out full of energy and surprised the Lakers, winning the third quarter and cutting the lead to just three goals. Led by Tony Golin's spectacular performance in the goal, Mercyhurst allowed only one goal in the fourth quarter and eventually won the game by a score of 16-11. Vujovic and Derek Kagen led the team on offense scoring four goals each.

What's Next

The Lakers are scheduled to travel to Morgantown, WV next weekend to participate in Conference Crossover Tournament. They will take on Wagner College and Navy on Saturday, October 8th and follow that with a game against Fordham on Sunday, October 9th.
