The Mercyhurst Men's Water Polo team swam into action on Saturday afternoon at the Hallman Aquatics Center, for two MAWPC conference match ups.
In game one, the Lakers matched up with McKendree University. The visitors jumped out to a 2-0 lead 3 minutes and 31 seconds into the first stanza. Mercyhurst responded well as Derek Kagen ripped two shots past net and tied things up at two goals a piece.Â
McKendree then went on the score four unanswered to end the first half, including a power play goal that was scored as time was expiring.
After McKendree scored twice to make it an 8-2 game, Teagan Thomas and Michael Gutman found the back of the cage to tighten up things and make it an 8-4 ballgame. McKendree then rallied off four straight points once again to go up 12-4.
Thomas added his second and third goals of the game in the fourth quarter however it was McKendree that went on the get the victory 14-6.
Tony Golin was in net for the duration of game one, he faced 19 shots, saving five of them.
In Game two, the Lakers matched up against Salem. Salem came away with the victory 17-9. In the first half the game tipped back and forth with both teams taking the lead at different points. Salem entered halftime with a slim 7-6 lead.
In the second half, the Tigers began to sprint away with the lead. They scored 11 goals in the half compared to the Lakers 3.
Derek Kagen led Mercyhurst in scoring, he fired in three goals and added an assist. Teagan Thomas and Mathieu Davis each tallied two points in the second match.Â
