Men's Hockey Mounts Comeback But Falls to Bentley

WALTHAM, MA—The Mercyhurst Men's Hockey went back on the road for an Atlantic Hockey matchup with Bentley, in the first game of the series the Lakers fell 4-3.

How it Happened

Bentley scored first at the 12:37 mark of the first period.

With just over 30 seconds remaining in open period, Cade Townend scored on the final second of the power play. Mickey Burns extended his point streak with an assist while Carson Briere also had an assist, mading an impact in his first game back since Nov. 13.

After the first period, the two teams went to the locker room tied with shots being 12-7 Lakers.

In the second period the Falcons scored the lone goal of the period.

Mercyhurst went to room down one despite outshooting Bentley 22-17 through 40 minutes.

Early in the third period the Lakers were faced with a 5-3 penalty kill for a full two minutes. The Falcons took advantage and scored their third goal of the night. The Lakers were then given another penalty, shortly after the penalty expired Bentley made it a 4-1 game.

Townend scored his second power play goal of the night at the 16:42 mark of the final frame. Owen Norton and Austin Heidemann picked up assists on the play.

Mercyhurst made it a one goal game with just over 45 seconds remaining in the frame as Heidemann scored with the goalie pulled. Norton picked up his second assist on the last-minute goal. The Lakers could not get another one and came up just short.

Mercyhurst outshot the Falcons 35-26, Hank Johnson made 22 saves in the loss.

Battle of Special Teams

The fifth ranked Mercyhurst power play went 2-6 on the power play as Townend had both goals. The Laker power play killed off three of five penalties.

The Lakers are back at it again tomorrow as they take on Bentley in the second game of the weekend series.
