Water Polo Falls in Hard Fought Match vs Salem

The Mercyhurst Men's Water Polo team took the pool on Sunday morning during the second day of the Mid-Atlantic West Region Championships. The Lakers fell in the tournament's third-place game to Salem 17-14.

In the first quarter the Lakers stormed out of the gates as they took a 4-1 lead over the Tigers to begin the match, Salem bounced back and went on a 3-0 scoring run to knot things up at 4-4. Mercyhurst was able to take a one goal lead into the ensuing quarter courtesy of Reed Bearden's score with 22 seconds left in the first.

Both Goalkeepers showed off plenty of skill in the second quarter and because of that scoring was limited. Tony Golin started in net for the Lakers, he recorded 16 saves in the game. Salem would hold an 8-6 lead going into the halftime break.

As the third quarter progressed, Salem grew their lead gradually. Michael Gutman scored twice in the quarter and Derek Kagen added a goal, however the Lakers faced a 15-10 deficit on the scoreboard as the teams went into the final quarter.

Kagan and Joel Parnell pulled Mercyhurst closer to Salem in the fourth as they each scored two goals a piece but it was not enough to put them past the Tigers.
