The Mercyhurst University Men's Water Polo dove into the pool on the campus of McKendree University on Saturday. The Lakers squared off against two MAWPC opponents in Salem and Gannon.
In the first game, Mercyhurst went up against the Salem Tigers. Derek Kagen started the scoring in this one, he rifled in a shot just 26 seconds into the contest to give Mercyhurst an early 1-0 lead. Salem then went on to score two consecutive goals and take the lead, until Kagen again found the back of the net for Mercyhurst to tie things back up at 2-2. The Lakers finished the quarter with a 3-2 lead courtesy of an Aleksa Vucurovic shot that went in with 17 seconds left in the quarter.
The Tigers tied things back up not long into the second period. The teams traded goal after goal eventually going into the halftime break tied 5-5. Vucurovic and Reed Bearden captured goals for Mercyhurst in the quarter.
During the third quarter, Salem scored two consecutive goals to take a 7-5 lead. Mathieu Davis scored the lone Lakers goal of the quarter at the 3:20 mark. Salem would score two more times in the third to take a 9-6 lead going into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, Davis, Kagen, and
Nicholas Miller all scored for Mercyhurst however that was not enough to complete the comeback as Salem went on the win 14-11.
In game number two, the Lakers matched up with cross-town rival Gannon University. The Golden Knights jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Davis netted the lone goal in the game for Mercyhurst.
Gannon added four more goals after that sequence and went on to capture the victory 8-1.
Tony Golin made the start in the cage for the Lakers. He was credited with nine saves and three steals.Â
