BLOOMSBURG, Pa.— The Mercyhurst women's tennis team claimed the PSAC championship, defeating Slippery Rock, 4-1, in the PSAC Tournament final on Saturday.
Kayla Frost was named the PSAC Tournament's Most Valuable Player.
With both the Mercyhurst men's and women's tennis teams claiming PSAC championships, Mercyhurst became only the second school in conference history to win both titles; Bloomsburg was the other (1996).
DOUBLES
- Mercyhurst won 2 of 3 doubles matches to take a 1-0 match lead.
- In the No. 1 match, Kayla Frost and Sangeeta Roopan took a 6-4 win over Viola Lugmayr and Lois Page.
- After Slippery Rock evened pairs play at 1-1, Athina Tsagkaraki and Hannah Wenzel won a tiebreaker at No. 3 against Lauren Fadden and Allie Welch to secure the doubles point.
SINGLES
- Slippery Rock evened the match at 1-1 before Mercyhurst stormed back for the next three points to claim the PSAC crown.
- Roopan defeated Lugmayr, 6-2, 6-4, to put the Lakers back into the lead at No. 2.
- Naomi Jahr earned a first-set tiebreaker in the No. 5 match to get past Fadden, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3.
- Wenzel provided the clincher at No. 6 in three sets over Welch, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
NEXT UP
- The Lakers (17-3) will await word on their opponents for the NCAA Tournament during Tuesday's selection show.
