Baseball Splits Second Half of Weekend Series With Gannon

McRandal Earned the Save In Game One
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ERIE, Pa.-- The Mercyhurst Baseball team Split the second half of the weekend series with crosstown rival Gannon.  Mercyhurst was able to hold on in game one getting out of a bases loaded final inning.  Gannon would manage to close out the second game though with a walkoff homerun to capture the 6-4 win.

Game One (W, 7-6):

The Lakers' lineup was dialed in at the plate for game one. They had eight different players record a hit, including Jack Elliott and Alex O'Donnell's homeruns. Tyler Garbee was on the mound and he recorded seven strikeouts in five innings. He gave up three earned runs, three hits, and posted his seventh win of the year.

O'Donnell did not waste any time and put the Lakers on the board in the first. He hit a three-run homer to right center, giving the Lakers an early 3-0 lead. Gannon would then score one run in the second inning and two more in the fifth inning to tie the game at 3.

Luke Baranchak broke this short-lived tie by driving in Dominic Cecere with a RBI double in the sixth. Baranchak would later score on a wild pitch. Elliott kept the momentum going, by hitting a two-run shot to right field. This gave the Lakers a 7-3 lead.

Gannon kept it interesting in the seventh, scoring three runs and cutting their deficit to 7-6. Nicholas McRandal would not be fazed when he came in relief with 1 out and the bases loaded. He struck out both batters he faced and ended Gannon's hope of a comeback. He earned his first save of the year and gave the Lakers a 7-6 win.

Game Two (L, 6-4):

The Lakers came up just short in game two, where Gannon would win it in the bottom of the seventh. Russell Lamovec started the game for Mercyhurst and pitched four innings. He struck out two batters, gave up three earned runs, and five hits. Matthew Schneider and Domenic DeRenzo each had a homerun and two hits.

Gannon would get the first run of the game in the second inning. In the third inning, Jack Elliott tied the game with his RBI triple. Gannon then scored two runs of their own to give them a 3-1 lead.

Schneider went yard in fourth to cut the lead down to one. In the next inning, DeRenzo also hit a homerun, giving the Lakers their first lead of the game to make it 4-3.

The score would remain 4-3 until the Golden Knights walked it off from a three-run homer. Gannon took game two, 6-4.

NEXT UP: The Lakers will enter the PSAC tournament this upcoming week as the number two seed as they take on the number three team from the PSAC East, Bloomsburg at 3:30 PM on May 8th.
