Box Score MILLERSVILLE, Pa.— The Mercyhurst baseball team defeats Bloomsburg 11-0 to win the Atlantic Regional I Championship on Saturday.
Domenic DeRenzo and
Josh Surowiec led the Lakers in the hit category with two each. DeRenzo also led the team with five RBI, four of them coming off a grand slam that really opened the game up for the Lakers.
Â
In the second, Mercyhurst jumped on the board early as three runs crossed the plate in the inning. Schneider got the inning going by reaching base on balls before Surowiec singled to center field.Â
Hunter Snyder then laid down a SAC bunt to move the runners over to second and first with only one out in the home half of the second.Â
Luke Baranchak then answered the call with a double to left field scoring both Surowiec and Schneider. DeRenzo would keep the inning alive with a single to left field scoring Baranchak.
Â
Christian Young would not allow Bloomsburg to answer the Lakers three runs to keep the momentum in Mercyhurst's favor. In the bottom half of the third, Mercyhurst kept the runs coming as
Jack Elliott,
Alex O'Donnell and
Matthew Schneider all were walked to load the bases. Surowiec took full advantage of the situation singling through the right side scoring Elliott. O'Donnell would be thrown out at home to keep it a 4-0 MU lead. After Schneider would score on a bases loaded walk,
Dominic Cecere would single to left center scoring Surowiec. Dom DeRenzo would then hit a deep shot to left for a grand slam homerun putting the Lakers up 10-0 and capping the seven running inning for the green and blue.Â
Â
Young would continue to deal sitting the Huskies down one, two, three in the top of the 4
th and struck out two of the three. In the Sixth, O'Donnell would add insurance to the Laker lead with a SAC fly to right scoring Gibson. In the 8
th Young would force the Huskies to go three up, three down again. In the ninth Bloomsburg would find some life with a Chasanov triple to right center but Young would seem unfazed striking out the final batter of the game.Â
Â
This would punch the Lakers ticket to the Atlantic Super Regional. With Bloomsburg being shutout, the Lakers have now kept opponents scoreless for 31 straight innings, going back the extra innings game against Bloomsburg in the opening round. Â
Christian Young ( 6-3) would get the win after a stellar complete game shutout. Young only allowed three hits, struck out eight and let up just one walk.Â
JJ Spehrley (6-3) got the loss in today's game throwing two innings, allowing three hits, five earned runs and struckout two.Â
