CHARLESTON, W. Va. -- The Mercyhurst women's tennis team defeated Slippery Rock, 4-2, at the Atlantic Region #1 Tournament, which began on Monday. With the victory, the Lakers (18-7) won their eighth straight match and advanced to the Atlantic Region #1 final against top-seed -- and host -- West Virginia State.
DOUBLES
- The Lakers fell behind in doubles action as SRU won 2 of 3 matches to take a 1-0 lead.
- Kayla Frost and Sangeeta Roopan claimed MU's only win in pairs, taking a 6-4 decision over Viola Lugmayr and Lois Page in the top-tier match. The win gave Mercyhurst a 1-0 edge in the doubles competition before The Rock responded with the next two points.
SINGLES
- Mercyhurst rolled through singles play, winning 4 of 5 contests to clinch the win.
- Ivona Plecevic evened the score for Mercyhurst, taking a 7-5, 6-3, decision against Page at No. 3 singles.
- Athina Tsagkaraki followed with a win at No. 4 over Olivia Warner as she won, 6-2, 6-0.
- SRU pulled even at 2-2 with a win at No. 5 before the Lakers took the final two points.
- Frost bested Lacey Cohen, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), in the No. 1 match, helping MU take a 3-2 lead.
- Roopan provided the clinching point, defeating Lugmayr in the No. 2 contest, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).
NEXT UP
- Mercyhurst will take on West Virginia State (18-5), which is the top seed in the Atlantic Region. The Lakers and Yellow Jackets met earlier this season as WVSU took a 5-2 decision on Apr. 15.
- The winner of the MU/WVSU matchup will advance to the NCAA Round of 16 in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
