ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst women's tennis team defeated non-conference opponent Fairmont State, 8-1, and claimed its 18th consecutive victory on Sunday. The Lakers are ranked No. 2 in the Atlantic Region.
The Lakers won the first two doubles points and built a 2-1 lead through pairs play before sweeping all six singles contests.
Adina Spahalic provided the match-clinching point when she won at No. 5 singles.
Adrianna Jeffress and
Kayla Frost (No. 6 Atlantic doubles) got Mercyhurst started with an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles over Isadora Matos and Bailey Edeburn. That was followed by the Lakers' win at third doubles by
Ivona Plecevic and
Athina Tsagkaraki, who teamed for an 8-1 victory over Geena Lammertin and Katelyn Shirkey.
In the No. 1 doubles match, the MU duo of Spahalic and
Saioa Gomez de Segura (No. 4 Atlantic doubles) had its 20-match winning streak snapped by Fairmont's Trinite Klamadji and Heloisa Adams (No. 10 Atlantic doubles) by an 8-4 decision.
In singles play, Tsagkaraki scored the first Mercyhurst point, defeating Kate Lauerman, 6-0, 6-0, at sixth singles. Jeffress (No. 3 Atlantic singles) then finished a 6-1, 6-0, victory against Matos at No. 3 singles, setting the stage for Spahalic's 6-0, 6-1, triumph over Hayley Hatfield.
Plecevic, Gomez de Segura and Frost tacked on wins at Nos. 4, 1 and 2, respectively. Plecevic won against Edeburn, 6-0, 6-1; NCAA Division II-ranked-18th Gomez de Segura (No. 1 Atlantic singles) defeated Klamadji (No. 14 Atlantic singles), 6-0, 6-3; and Frost (No. 2 Atlantic singles) outlasted Adams (No. 17 Atlantic singles), 7-6 (7-3), 6-0.
Gomez de Segura extended her individual win streak to 17 while Spahalic is on a 16-match win streak, Tsagkaraki has won 15 straight matches and Plecevic is on an 13-match winning streak. Jeffress has won eight straight. Singles records for each player are as follows: Gomez de Segura (31-2), Frost (23-5), Jeffress (26-3), Plecevic (22-4), Spahalic (19-2) and Tsagkaraki (18-4).
Frost and Jeffress combined for their 13th straight win in pairs action. Plecevic and Tsagkaraki are 10-1 in their last 11 matches together. Gomez de Segura and Spahalic are 23-2 in their last 25 matches.
The Lakers (18-0) will be in action next when they host Edinboro for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division match on Wednesday.
