Women's Tennis Now Winners Of 19 Straight With Victory Over Edinboro

ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst women's tennis team earned its 19th consecutive victory with a 9-0 sweep of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division opponent Edinboro on Wednesday at Pennbriar Athletic Club. The Lakers are ranked second in the Atlantic Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association while EU is No. 7.

The Lakers (19-0, 4-0) jumped ahead with doubles wins in order of flight, Nos. 1-3, and then finished off the Fighting Scots with all six singles points. Athina Tsagkaraki recorded the match-clinching point at No. 6 singles with her win against Payton Tomasko.

Saioa Gomez de Segura and Adina Spahalic (No. 4 Atlantic doubles) got the Lakers on the board with their 8-2 win against Laura Lopez and Tatiana Batalla before Mercyhurst took a 2-0 lead with an 8-3 victory by Adrianna Jeffress and Kayla Frost (No. 6 Atlantic doubles) over Roxana Yeh and Marija Tmusic.

Tsagkaraki and Ivona Plecevic finished off doubles action for MU, taking an 8-3 decision versus Tomasko and Jelena Vucenovic.

In singles play, Jeffress (No. 3 Atlantic singles) recorded the Lakers' fourth point of the match with her 6-1, 6-0, win against Yeh. Then, Tsagkaraki won her match with Tomasko, 6-0, 6-0.

The next four Laker points were scored, in order, by Frost, Gomez de Segura, Plecevic and Spahalic at Nos. 2, 1, 4 and 5, respectively.

Frost (No. 2 Atlantic singles) bested Batalla, 6-3, 6-4; 18th-ranked Gomez de Segura (No. 1 Atlantic singles) defeated Lopez (No. 12 Atlantic singles), 6-2, 6-2; Plecevic won against Vucenovic, 6-0, 6-3; and Spahalic outlasted Tmusic, 7-5, 6-4.

Gomez de Segura extended her individual win streak to 18 while Spahalic is on a 17-match win streak, Tsagkaraki has won 16 straight matches and Plecevic is on an 14-match winning streak. Jeffress has won nine straight. Singles records for each player are as follows: Gomez de Segura (32-2), Frost (24-5), Jeffress (27-3), Plecevic (23-4), Spahalic (20-2) and Tsagkaraki (19-4).

Frost and Jeffress combined for their 14th straight win in pairs action. Plecevic and Tsagkaraki are 11-1 in their last 12 matches together. Gomez de Segura and Spahalic are 24-2 in their last 26 matches.

Mercyhurst will return to action on Friday with a 2 p.m. PSAC West match at Indiana (Pa.).
