WILSON, N.C. -- The 25th-ranked Mercyhurst women's tennis team claimed its 10th consecutive win, defeating non-conference opponent Barton, 8-1, on Thursday. The Lakers are also rated No. 2 in the Atlantic Region.
The Lakers jumped out to a 3-0 lead through doubles action and then clinched victory when their two nationally-ranked singles players -- No. 4
Saioa Gomez de Segura and No. 50
Kayla Frost -- pushed the MU lead to 5-0.
In doubles action, Gomez de Segura and
Adina Spahalic claimed their 13th straight pairs victory with an 8-6 decision against Barton's Daria Avram and Marissa Stevenson at No. 1 doubles. Gomez de Segura and Spahalic, who are rated fourth in the Atlantic, are 16-1 in their last 17 matches.
Frost and
Adrianna Jeffress, who are ranked sixth in the Atlantic, won the second doubles match. They bested Vanessa Sanoja and Ada Vargas, 8-4, for their fifth straight pairs win.
Ivona Plecevic and
Athina Tsagkaraki teamed for the Lakers' No. 3 doubles point with their fourth straight win together. The freshman duo bested Claudia Capellades and Whitney Hamilton, 8-3.
As singles play got underway, Gomez de Segura pushed Mercyhurst to the bring of victory with her 6-0, 6-0, performance against Avram at No. 1 singles. Gomez de Segura, rated No. 1 in the Atlantic, claimed her ninth straight singles win and is now 23-2 this year.
Frost, who is No. 2 in the Atlantic, won her singles match over Sanoja, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5), to stretch her win streak to nine matches, as well.
Spahalic and Tsagkaraki extended individual win streaks to eight apiece while Plecevic won her fifth straight singles match. Jeffress had an eight-match win streak snapped.
Spahalic, who is 9-1 in her last 10 matches, won the fifth singles match over Capellades, 6-1, 6-4, while Tsagkaraki took a 6-0, 6-4 win against Hamilton at sixth singles. Tsagkaraki is 10-1 in her last 11 matches.
Plecevic is 12-1 in her last 13 matches after defeating Vargas, 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 4 singles match.
Jeffress suffered her loss at No. 3 singles to Marissa Stevenson, 6-3, 6-3.
The Lakers will compete next when they visit Walsh on Friday, Mar. 16.
