ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst women's tennis team continued its winning ways with a 9-0 sweep of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division opponent California (Pa.) on Friday at Pennbriar Athletic Club. The Lakers, who are ranked No. 2 in the Atlantic Region, have won 16 consecutive matches.
The Lakers snagged a pair of 8-0 points in doubles action, taking a 3-0 match lead. Mercyhurst then swept singles play with the clincher occurring at No. 4 singles with a win by
Ivona Plecevic.
Kayla Frost and
Adrianna Jeffress (No. 6 Atlantic doubles) got Mercyhurst started with their 8-0 sweep at second doubles over Emily Suckling and Emilee Leydig. The Lakers' No. 3 doubles pair of Plecevic and
Athina Tsagkaraki earned its 8-0 win over Alexa Yhylar and McKenzie Wilson.
Saioa Gomez de Segura and
Adina Spahalic (No. 4 Atlantic doubles) finished out pairs play for MU, taking an 8-4 win at No. 1 singles against Elizabeth Wohar and Charlie Gallagher.
In singles play, Laker players won each match, 6-0, 6-0. Jeffress (No. 3 Atlantic singles) set the table with her win at third singles over Suckling. Plecevic then followed with a victory against Leydig at No. 4 singles.
Mercyhurst's wins then came, in order, from Tsagkaraki, Spahalic, Frost and Gomez de Segura at Nos. 6, 5, 2 and 1, respectively.
Tsagkaraki bested Wilson, Spahalic defeated Uhylar, Frost (No. 2 Atlantic singles) handled Gallagher and Gomez de Segura (No. 1 Atlantic singles), who is rated 14th in NCAA Division II, won over Wohar.
Gomez de Segura extended her individual win streak to 15 while Spahalic is on a 14-match win streak, Tsagkaraki has won 13 straight matches and Plecevic is on an 11-match winning streak. Jeffress has won six straight. Singles records for each player are as follows: Gomez de Segura (29-2), Frost (22-4), Jeffress (24-3), Plecevic (20-4), Spahalic (17-2) and Tsagkaraki (16-4).
Gomez de Segura and Spahalic teamed for their 19th consecutive doubles win; they are 22-1 in their last 23 matches. Frost and Jeffress combined for their 11th straight win in pairs action. Plecevic and Tsagkaraki are 8-1 in their last nine matches together.
The Lakers will play again on Saturday when non-conference opponent Charleston (W. Va.) visits Erie.
