ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst women's tennis team secured its 15th consecutive victory as the Lakers defeated Slippery Rock, 8-1, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division matchup on Tuesday at the Pennbriar Athletic Club. The Lakers are ranked No. 2 in the Atlantic Region while SRU is fifth.

A forfeit doubles point staked the Lakers a 1-0 lead before they tacked on two more points at Nos. 1-2. Another forfeit point -- this time at singles -- pushed the Laker lead to 4-0 and set the stage for the clinching point at No. 4 singles by MU's Ivona Plecevic.

Adrianna Jeffress and Kayla Frost teamed (No. 6 Atlantic doubles) for the Lakers' first on-court point, winning the No. 2 doubles match over Amy Varckette and Lauren Fadden, 8-3. Saioa Gomez de Segura and Adina Spahalic (No. 4 Atlantic doubles) followed with the next Laker point, taking an 8-4 decision against Carla Corrochano and Lacey Cohen (No. 7 Atlantic doubles) in the top doubles match.

Plecevic locked up the Mercyhurst win with a 6-0, 6-1, triumph against Allie Welch at fourth singles. She was followed, in chronological order, by Spahalic, Gomez de Segura and Jeffress.

Spahalic bested Varckette, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 5 singles; Gomez de Segura, rated 12th in NCAA Division II and No. 1 in the Atlantic, handled Cohen (No. 11 Atlantic singles), 6-2, 6-3, in the top singles match; and Jeffress (No. 3 singles) handled Fadden, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 3 singles.

Frost suffered the Lakers' only lost point in a matchup of regionally-ranked players. She, rated No. 2 in the Atlantic, fell to Corrochano (No. 13 Atlantic singles), 6-3, 0-6, 1-0 (10-7), in the second singles match.

Whiile Gomez de Segura extended her individual win streak to 14, Frost had hers snapped at 13. Spahalic is on a 13-match win streak, Tsagkaraki's streak remained at 12 due to forfeit, and Plecevic claimed her 10th win in a row. Singles records for each player are as follows: Gomez de Segura (28-2), Frost (21-4), Jeffress (23-3), Plecevic (19-4), Spahalic (16-2) and Tsagkaraki (15-4).

Gomez de Segura and Spahalic teamed for their 18th consecutive doubles win; they are 21-1 in their last 22 matches. Frost and Jeffress combined for their 10th straight win in pairs action. Plecevic and Tsagkaraki are 7-1 in their last eight matches together.

Mercyhurst (15-0, 2-0) will play its next match on Friday when California (Pa.) visits for a 12 p.m. PSAC West match.
