ERIE, Pa. -- Two Mercyhurst doubles teams advanced to the semifinals while three singles competitors remained alive in the championship bracket after day one of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Women's Atlantic Regional, which began Saturday at Pennbriar Athletic Club.

Adrianna Jeffress and Kayla Frost, the top-seeded doubles team, claimed an 8-5 quarterfinal victory over Slippery Rock's Viola Lugmayr and Olivia Warner.

Saioa Gomez de Segura and Adina Spahalic won two matches to gain their entry into the doubles semifinals. They defeated Elise Edwards and Silvana Slusarciuc (Charleston), 8-4, and Lacey Cohen and Carla Corrochana (Slippery Rock), 8-4.

Last year, Laker doubles teams met in the ITA Atlantic finals; Gomez de Segura was on the winning side. The Jeffress/Frost pairing is looking for its second straight finals berth together.

In the doubles B bracket, freshmen Ivona Plecevic and Athina Tsagkaraki teamed in a 9-7 quarterfinal loss to Bri Guthrie and Bridget Dillon (Charleston).

In singles action, top-seed -- and two-time ITA Atlantic champion -- Gomez de Segura took a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Leandra Roekler (West Chester).

Spahalic had a 1-1 day, winning her Round of 32 matchup against Ana Berbel (West Liberty), 6-0, 6-1, before falling to Cohen (SRU), 6-1, 6-4.

Frost and Jeffress added Round of 32 wins in the singles championship bracket. Frost outlasted Lugmayr (SRU), 3-6, 7-6 (2), 10-8, while Jeffress bested Trinite' Klamadji (Fairmont State), 6-2, 6-2.

Gomez de Segura has qualified for the quarterfinals. Frost and Jeffress will compete in the Round of 16 on Sunday.

In the singles B bracket, Tsagkaraki picked up two wins to advance to the quarterfinals. She defeated Alyssa Hoffman (West Liberty), 6-1, 6-0, and Dillon (Charleston), 6-2, 6-0.

Plecevic fell in her only singles match as she fell to Alize Uyttenhove (Charleston), 6-4, 6-3.

The regional will continue on Sunday and Monday.
