Fifth Seeded Lakers Struggle With Fourth-Seeded Monterey Bay At WWPA Championships

GENEVA, Ohio -- The Mercyhurst women's water polo team dropped its first game of the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Championships 13-8 to California Monterey Bay on Friday afternoon at the SPIRE Institute. The loss snaps the Lakers' three-game win streak entering the tournament.

The fifth-seeded Lakers (6-12) struggled to overcome a tough Otters' (8-11) offense. For every goal Mercyhurst scored, Monterey Bay had an immediate answer. The Lakers out-shot the Otters 30-24 but only converted on 26.7 percent of its chances while the Otters shot over 50-percent.

For Mercyhurst, Becky Insalaco led the team with 8 shots and 2 goals followed by Sarah Hershey with 5 shots and 1 goal. Kensey Clinch, Becky Insalaco, and Erin Glass each had two assists.

Mercyhurst will get a rematch with Erie rival Gannon tomorrow, April 29, in the WWPA tournament's fifth-place game at 12 p.m. once again at the SPIRE Institute.
