ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's water polo team continued their season when they faced off against McKendree and Salem. They lost the first game against the Bearcats 13-10, and the second game 15-4 against the Tigers.
Game One
In the first quarter, the Lakers got on the board first with a goal from freshman
Bailey Dunn with just under seven minutes to play. McKendree scored three in a row, taking a 3-1 lead into the second quarter.
With just under six minutes to go, the Bearcats continued their offense, and got on the board to extend their lead to three. 14 seconds later, junior
Freya Green responded with a goal for Mercyhurst. McKendree responded with three goals, pushing their lead back up to five. Senior
Bri Allstun scored a goal for the Lakers, keeping them in the match. The Bearcats scored back-to-back goals, extending their lead. With one second left, freshman
Joey Roedl scored a goal, narrowing the deficit to five going into halftime.
The Bearcats opened up the quarter with two more goals, pushing their lead to seven. Fifth year
Alexa Corrao scored her first, narrowing the lead back down to six. Just a minute later, she proceeded to score her second goal of the game, keeping the Lakers in the match. Freshman
Adriana Boltes Moragues scored back-to-back goals, narrowing the lead to just three heading into the fourth quarter.
With just under six minutes left, Corrao scored her third goal of the game, giving her a hat trick on the day ,and narrowing the lead to just two. The Bearcats responded with two goals of their own, pushing their lead back up to four. Dunn scored with seven seconds remaining, but McKendree held on to the lead for a 13-10 victory.
Game Two
In the first quarter, Salem scored four consecutive goals, taking a 4-0 lead going into the second quarter.
The Lakers opened up the second quarter coming from sophomore
Victoria Mastrangelo, narrowing the deficit at three. The Tigers scored four more goals, extending their lead. Senior
Krista Domaracki stopped Salem's scoring run, with a goal for Mercyhurst. With 19 seconds left, the Tigers scored to take a 9-2 lead.
In the third quarter, Domaracki scored her second goal of the game to keep the Lakers in the game. The Tigers went on a three-goal scoring run, before freshman
Kate Martin scored with three seconds left, narrowing the deficit to eight heading into the fourth.
The Tigers proceeded to score two more goals, securing a 15-4 victory.
The Lakers will return to the pool on Saturday, March 21 when they play in the Princeton Invitational against Brown at 10:30 a.m. and Bucknell at 5:30 p.m.
