PRINCETON, N.J. – The Mercyhurst women's water polo team competed at the Princeton Invitational with matches against Brown and Bucknell. They lost the first match 14-2 to Brown, and lost the second match 11-6 against Bucknell.
Game One
In the first quarter, Brown opened up the game with three consecutive goals, taking a 3-0 lead into the second.
In the second quarter, the Bears continued to display their offense with a goal within the first minute of the quarter. Freshman
Mercedes Feliciano Fernandez got on the board for the Lakers, narrowing the deficit to three. Brown proceeded to score three more goals, taking a 7-1 lead into the half.
The Lakers opened up the third quarter with a goal coming from sophomore
Victoria Mastrangelo, keeping Mercyhurst in the match. The Bears responded with three goals of their own, taking a 10-2 lead into the fourth quarter.
Brown continued to score to extend their lead. They scored four more goals, holding onto a 14-2 victory.
Game Two
The Lakers opened up the quarter with a goal coming from senior
Krista Domaracki, taking an early 1-0 lead. Freshman
Mercedes Feliciano Fernandez added onto the lead with a goal of her own. Bucknell responded with a goal, but the Lakers held onto a 2-1 lead going into the second quarter.
In the second quarter, sophomore
Victoria Mastrangelo pushed the lead back up to two with a goal for Mercyhurst. The Bisons responded with a goal just two minutes later, narrowing the Laker lead to one. Just 29 seconds later, Fernandez scored her second goal of the game, pushing the Lakers lead back up to two. Bucknell responded with two goals, tying the game 4-4 going into the half.
Bucknell broke the tie in the third quarter, taking a 5-4 lead. They continued to add to the lead with two more goals, taking a 7-4 lead heading into the fourth.
The Bisons continued to add to their lead, scoring two more goals to take a five-goal lead. Junior
Freya Green scored for Mercyhurst to keep them into the game, narrowing Bucknell's lead to four. Bucknell immediately responded with a goal of their own. With two minutes left, Fernandez scored her third goal of the game, giving her a hat trick on the day. Bucknell added another goal, securing an 11-6 victory.
The Lakers return to action on March 27 when they travel to West Virginia to compete in the Salem Invitational. They will play Saint Francis at 7:30 p.m.
