CALIFORNIA, Pa. -- The 46th-ranked Mercyhurst women's tennis team rolled past California (Pa.) for an 8-1 victory in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference competition on Saturday. The win was the Lakers' eighth straight victory -- and it was the program's first win against Cal since Mar. 10, 2006.
In a matchup of regionally-ranked teams, Mercyhurst swept Cal in doubles action, outpointing its opponents 24-6, before winning 5 of 6 matches during the doubles portion. The Lakers are rated second in the Atlantic Region while California is No. 7.
Two different Mercyhurst pairs teams stretched winning streaks to nine matches. Those duos were the No. 2 and No. 3 MU doubles teams.
The second doubles team of
Annie Baich and
Saioa Gomez de Segura, which is ranked 25th in NCAA Division II and second in the Atlantic Region, won over Katie Olson and Liz Wohar, 8-1.
At third doubles,
Adina Spahalic and Alexis Nay shut out Charlie Gallagher and Emily Suckling, 8-0.
The Lakers' No. 1 doubles team of
Adrianna Jeffress and
Kayla Frost (No. 3 Atlantic) defeated Veronika Mikulis and Alyssa Savill, 8-5.
Singles winners for the Lakers were Gomez de Segura, Nay, Jeffress, Baich and
Carmen Mantecon Duro. Baich and Gomez de Segura, who is ranked 20th in D-II and No. 1 in the Atlantic, stretched win streaks to eight matches apiece.
Gomez de Segura bested Mikulis at first singles, 6-0, 6-0, while Baich won at No. 6 singles against Gallagher, 6-0, 6-0. Jeffress earned her fifth consecutive win, taking the decision at No. 5 singles over Suckling, 6-0, 6-0.
Mantecon Duro's win came at third singles against Olson, 6-3, 6-2, while Nay bested Wohar, 6-0, 6-1.
Frost, who had won seven straight matches herself, had her streak snapped by Savill at No. 2 singles, 7-5, 6-1.
