ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst men's water polo begins its title defense in the 2017 Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) West Region Championship to be held this weekend at the Prep-Villa Event Center's Hallman Aquatic Center Nov. 4-5.
 
The Lakers (9-9) enter Westerns as the number-two seed and have won their last three games, all of which were against current tournament participants. The Lakers are 7-5 this season against teams in the tournament field.
 
Mercyhurst won the 2016 West Region Championship, taking down W&J, Gannon, and Connecticut College to collect the first-ever Westerns crown.
 
Mercyhurst takes on seventh-seed Monmouth in the first round on Saturday, Nov. 4, scheduled for noon. They defeated Fighting Scots (1-11) 14-9 in their only matchup this season.
 
Other first round matchups include top-seed Gannon (14-6) facing off with number-eight Washington & Jefferson (1-15), fourth-seed Connecticut College (7-12) taking on five-seed LaSalle (5-16), and number-three Salem International (10-12) battling number-six McKendree (6-16).
