WEST CHESTER, Pa. -- The 46th-ranked Mercyhurst women's tennis team defeated West Chester, 6-3, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference matchup on Friday.
The Lakers won two of three doubles matches before going 4-2 in singles competition.
Mercyhurst earned points at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles:
Annie Baich and
Saioa Gomez de Segura earned an 8-0 win over Rylee Power and Alyssa Rees at second doubles while
Carmen Mantecon Duro and
Adina Spahalic teamed for a Laker point at third doubles against Amalia Hartman and Abriana Nolan, 8-4.
Gomez de Segura, Baich, Spahalic and
Kayla Frost claimed singles points for Mercyhurst.
Gomez de Segura, who is ranked 24th in NCAA Division II, won a matchup between two regionally-ranked competitors. Gomez de Segura, No. 1 in the Atlantic Region, defeated Claire Uhle, who is 14th in the Atlantic, by a 6-3, 6-1 score at first singles. The No. 3 singles matches also featured regionally-rated players as West Chester's Madelyn Shaak, 18th in the Atlantic, defeated MU's
Adrianna Jeffress, seventh in the Atlantic, 7-5, 6-2.
Baich got her win for the Lakers over Nolan at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-0; Frost defeated Rees at fifth singles, 6-1, 6-0; and Spahalic got past Stephanie Cifarelli, 6-3, 6-2, at sixth singles.
