Women’s Water Polo Set to Play Cal State Monterey Bay at WWPA Championships

ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University women's water polo team finished their first regular season in the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), and was rewarded the fourth-seed heading into the WWPA Championships. The Lakers (8-10, 1-0 WWPA) will face the five-seed, California State Monterey Bay (5-24, 0-3 WWPA), at Chabot College in Hayward, California.

The first round matchup for the Lakers is a rematch from a game played at home earlier in the season. Mercyhurst took down the Otters, 12-11, in overtime back in late February. The win marked the Lakers' second victory on the young season, as they capped off the Mercyhurst Invitational with a 3-1 record.

UC San Diego (24-9, 3-0 WWPA) wrapped up the number one overall seed and a first round bye, while Sonoma State (12-13, 2-1 WWPA) earned the two-seed, and also received a bye in the first round. The host school, California State East Bay (14-10, 1-2 WWPA), Mercyhurst, Cal State Monterey Bay and Gannon take the three through six spots, respectively.

If the Lakers defeat the Otters on Friday, April 29th at 12:00 p.m. pacific time (3:00 p.m. eastern), they will face the one-seed UC San Diego on Saturday at the same time. A loss in round one would place Mercyhurst in the fifth place game on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. pacific (1:00 p.m. eastern) against the loser of game two in round one.
