ERIE, Pa. -- The 46th-ranked Mercyhurst women's tennis team dropped a 6-3 decision to California (Pa.) in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference matchup at Pennbriar Athletic Club on Saturday.
The Lakers (5-3, 1-1) fell behind 3-0 during doubles before splitting singles play.
The No. 1 pairs match featured the 12th-rated duo in NCAA Division II -- California's Lena Dimmer and Kiefer Shaw -- which defeated the Lakers' doubles team of
Adrianna Jeffress and
Kayla Frost, 8-4.
Mercyhurst picked up its points in the No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6 singles matchups.
Saioa Gomez de Segura, ranked 24th in D-II, earned a point for MU at first singles over Shaw, 6-4, 6-4.
Frost added a win for the Lakers at fifth singles against Holly Bennetts, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5, and
Adina Spahalic won at sixth singles over Jacqueline Olivia, 6-1, 6-3.
Mercyhurst's Jeffress was faced with the task of meeting a ranked opponent herself at No. 2 singles. She fell to 30th-ranked Lena Dimmer, 6-2, 6-3.
The Lakers will be in action again on Tuesday when they host Slippery Rock.
