WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Mercyhurst men's water polo team travelled to Washington, Pa. this weekend for three separate matches all hosted at Washington and Jefferson University. On Saturday, the Lakers lost to Connecticut College 14-13 in overtime and defeated Penn State Behrend 16-11. To close out the weekend, the Lakers defeated host W&J 8-7 on Sunday to complete the weekend with a 2-1 record.
Connecticut College 14 – Mercyhurst 13 (OT)
In the Lakers first match of the weekend, the Lakers found themselves behind early but fought back to force overtime, only to end up one goal shot in the extra period to lose 14-13. Connecticut College got out to a 4-2 lead after one quarter and led 6-3 at halftime. In the third quarter, goals on back-to-back Laker possessions by
Matt Bachler brought the Lakers back to within one at the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, both teams went back-and-forth exchanging goals and the score sat at 11-10 in favor of Conn. College. On the final Laker possession of regulation,
Jack Howe scored to tie the game with 10 seconds remaining and force overtime. In the first half of the extra period, Conn. College scored three straight goals to take a 14-11 lead. The Lakers led a comeback in the second half of OT, but came up one goal short and lost 14-13. Bachler and Howe led the Lakers with three goals each in the game.
Mercyhurst 16 – Penn State Behrend 11
Mercyhurst bounced back in their second game of the day with a 16-11 victory over Penn State Behrend. The Lakers benefitted from a strong start in the first quarter to take an early lead.
Ryan Witoslawski had two goals in the quarter and helped Mercyhurst to a 4-1 advantage. In the second quarter before halftime, the Lakers went on a four-goal run in the final 4:09 to extend their lead to 9-3 at the break.
In the second half, sat on their large lead and added a few goals to keep the Lions at bay.
Jackson Rehmet had two goals in third period and the Lakers led 12-8 after three quarters. The Lakers added four more goals in the fourth period to seal a 16-11 victory. Witoslawski and
Otis Tyson had four goals each to lead Mercyhurst offensively.
Mercyhurst 8– Washington & Jefferson 7
In the final game of the Lakers' weekend, Mercyhurst took on host Washington & Jefferson and beat the Presidents 8-7. The game seemed to be well in the Lakers' control until a W&J comeback in the fourth quarter.
After a 1-1 first quarter, Mercyhurst went on a three-goal run with two goals by
Connor Schmitz. The Lakers led 4-2 at the halftime break. This contest had 18 exclusions, the most of any Mercyhurst game during the weekend. The Lakers increased their lead to three-goals at the end of the third quarter by the score of 6-3. In the fourth quarter, the Lakers led 8-4 with 2:56 remaining. W&J scored three unanswered goals to pull within one, but the Lakers ran out the clock and won their second game of the weekend 8-7. Schmitz led the Lakers with three goals in the game.
The Lakers (8-7) host Massachusetts Institute of Technology in their next game on Saturday, Oct. 22 at the Cathedral Prep Events Center starting at 7:30 p.m.
