Shelby Bram were members of the Canadian National Women's Development Team, which went 3-0 en route to the Nations Cup championship during the Jan. 3-7 tournament.
Team Canada finished atop Group B at the event. It won against Sweden, 2-1, in a matchup that ended in a shootout. Canada then defeated Russia, 4-2. In the gold-medal game, the Canadians edged Finland, 4-3, in overtime.
"It was a great experience at the Nations Cup," Collins said. "Anything can happen in overtime, so I give full credit to our athletes. THey found a way to win and played as a team. It was a pleasure to coach at that level."
Collins is a native of Pilot Mound, Man., while Bram is from Saint Anne, Man.
Bram, a 2015 graduate of Mercyhurst, previously competed in the IIHF U-18 Championships for Canada, earning a silver medal. Collins had previously coached and played for Team Canada. She was a coach for Canada's U-18 team. As a player, she competed in five IIHF Championships tournaments, earning three gold medals and two silvers. She also played in six different "nations cups" -- either the Three Nations Cup or Four Nations Cup.
"I am grateful to Mercyhurst head coach Mike Sisti and Hockey Canada general manager Mel Davidson for allowing me to coach in both programs," Collins said. "I ask a lot from both of these individuals and I owe them so much for the opportunities to grow as a young coach. I'm excited to be back on campus at Mercyhurst and working toward our team goals here."
